Family Tree Maker - Up To Version 16 Review by Carol Librarian, Sep 2, 2018
RatingFamily Tree Maker, since this is an old program, doesn't have a copy of it even on a dusty old corner shelf. I didn't like the new platform that was offered recently. I had tried it and found that I would have to re-learn how to add information; being almost done with 4 sides of the family, I decided that I'd rather stick with what I know and like. Versions and dates and other ways of identifying Family Tree Maker software is confusing! I wish developers (and Family Tree Maker in particular) had a consistent way of dating and giving version numbers to their editions. Magazines have issue/volume numbers and dates and so do serial books. Why can't software ?
I've been using Family Tree Maker when it first came out. It was easy to use up to version 16. I wanted/needed the latest FTM version for Windows 10. When I went from FTM ver.16 to installing FTM ver. 22 (2014) —- I lost, or version 22 did not import, all of my NOTES! Version 22 was a big visual/logical clutter. Many times I think software is updated with big changes to justify charging more money and to market the upgrade with useless but luring talking points.
I spent many years collecting information and want software I can trust. The trend is for everything to go online, but I want my information safe, private and on my computer. I want reliable software on my computer and not in the clouds.
I was upset and very frustrated with FTM Ver. 22 (2014) and decided give FTM ver.16 a try on Windows 10.
BIG SURPRISE — I Just discovered my Windows 10 with latest updates (as of 9-2-2018) will run FTM Ver. 16! I now have my NOTES back.
P.S. I used the same file for both software versions but FTM ver. 22 did not import my Notes.
Biggest Pro: FTM Ver. 16 works on Windows 10 (updated to 9-2-2018)
Biggest Con: Will ver. 16 continue to work on later Windows 10 updates?
